While Airbnb may be updating their rules for using security cameras and other devices that might infringe your privacy, we’ve always done it. To us, as a family business, trust is everything. Plus, we think cameras are better off being used to make memories – not ruin your holiday.
What are Airbnb updating about privacy?
Coming on 30th April 2024, Airbnb are updating their policy on the use and disclosure of security cameras, recording devices, noise decibel monitors, and smart home devices for all listings.
These changes include;
Not being allowed to have cameras that monitor indoor spaces.
Owners must now disclose the location of outdoor cameras. For example, if they have cameras monitoring the front door and the pool.
Outdoor cameras are prohibited in spaces where guests expect greater privacy, like enclosed showers and saunas.
All Airbnb listers must disclose noise decibel monitors, which may only be present in common spaces.
Remember though, just like us these requirements don’t apply to devices in common spaces. That means outside of accommodation that we don’t control, like cameras in the lobby of an apartment building, for example.
CCTV cameras on the outside of an apartment building are still allowed
What about Smart devices like TVs?
Owners who list on Airbnb can still have smart home devices like TVs and voice assistants. They aren’t required to disclose these devices, but we always share information with our guests that they are there. Smart cameras such as internal Ring or Hive cameras aren’t allowed though and in our case, never were. We’re OK with doorbells but you’ll know that they’re there when you arrive, if fitted.
So how are Osprey Holiday Cottages different?
Well, just so you know – these rules aren’t a new idea. In fact, we’ve always done it and have never permitted internal cameras or noise recording devices or anything similar. To us, it’s important that you trust us and we trust our guests.
That doesn’t mean that we tolerate anti-social behaviour or noise though, so bear that in mind when booking.
Security cameras including smart devices like Ring or Hive recording internally aren’t permitted
